When www.windsor-berkshire.co.uk was set up in December 2004, getting
the basics right was going to ensure healthy visitor growth in first year.
The importance of well-formed clean underlying code on the pages cannot
be overestimated. From the outset the site was designed to use clean html
and cascading style sheets. Javascript has been kept to a minimum and
simplicity has been the overriding factor in all planning of the site.
The importance of 'page rank'
to the google search engine means that a large element of driving traffic
is to establish links from other sites. For www.windsor-berkshire.co.uk
this was achieved through requests to relevant sites as the first step
in the process. Within weeks we had ensured that 40 other sites were linking
to the site.
The site copy was designed to increase visits. Draft pages were reconfigured
using keyword incient analysis techniques to ensure the phrases on the
site matched the phrases being typed into search engines. For example,
where the site owners might have been tempted to write a headline "windsor
shops", analysis revealed that the phrase "shops in windsor"
would yeild 60% more visits.
By January 2006 www.windsor-berkshire.co.uk's homepage has a google pagerank
of 2 and visitor numbers were growing rapidly at 100% per quarter (see
graph below). By the summer there were 50 pages of content and individual
pages such as http://www.windsor-berkshire.co.uk/weddings.php
had a google PR of 4.
